Jumpstart helps families in financial need by covering costs associated with children’s sports and physical activities. This national program supports a wide range of activities—including skating—and can also help with equipment costs in some cases. Funding is granted based on eligibility, and applications can be submitted online year-round.
While the Didsbury Figure Skating Club is not affiliated with the Jumpstart program, we encourage families to explore this option if cost is a barrier to participation.
When cost is a hurdle, KidSport can help clear it.
If the cost of skating is keeping your child off the ice, KidSport may be able to help. This not-for-profit organization provides funding for children and youth to participate in organized sports. Grants are sent directly to the club to cover registration fees. It’s all about removing financial barriers so kids can stay active, connected, and confident.

What program should I register my child for?
Most first-time skaters begin in CanSkate, Skate Canada's national learn-to-skate program. It’s suitable for children aged 4 and up, regardless of previous experience.
If your child plays hockey or ringette, PowerSkate may be a better fit.
Reach out if you're unsure—we’re happy to help!
What’s the difference between CanSkate, Intro to STARSkate, and STARSkate?
Skaters typically begin in CanSkate, which teaches foundational skating skills in a fun, group setting. Once they’ve completed Stage 4, they may be invited to join Intro to StarSkate (ITS)—a bridge program that introduces figure skating elements like spins, jumps, and edges in a small-group format.
After ITS, skaters can move into the StarSkate program, which includes private or semi-private coaching, Skate Canada assessments, and further development in freeskate, skills, dance, and artistic disciplines.
Movement from one program to the next is based on skill readiness rather than age, and coaches will help guide families through each step.
Does my child need to know how to skate before joining?
Not at all! CanSkate is designed for beginners. Coaches and program assistants will help your child feel safe and confident on the ice—no experience necessary.
What equipment does my child need for CanSkate?
For safety and comfort, all CanSkaters are required to wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet—no other types of helmets are permitted.
Skaters will also need properly fitted skates and warm clothing that allows for movement; snow pants are recommended as they help cushion falls and keep skaters dry. Hands must be covered with mittens or gloves—please choose synthetic materials rather than knit, as knit gloves tend to stick to the ice and become wet and cold quickly.
Helmets with face cages are optional but often recommended for younger or more hesitant skaters.
