HELMET POLICY

The Didsbury Figure Skating Club (DFSC) follows the Skate Canada Helmet Use Policy, implemented as of July 1, 2011, as a proactive safety measure to help protect skaters in the early stages of learning. This policy was developed through consultation with skating professionals, coaches, and parents, and was approved by the Skate Canada Board of Directors.

Skate Canada is proud to offer CanSkate—the nation’s leading learn-to-skate program—and remains committed to improving the safety and quality of the skating experience for all participants. DFSC supports this initiative by requiring all coaches, parents, and skaters to understand and comply with the helmet policy.

Helmet Use Requirements

  • Skaters working on Stage 6 and below in CanSkate (this includes Intro to StarSkate), as well as all skaters in PowerSkate, must wear a CSA Group–approved hockey helmet bearing the CSA certification mark.
  • Coaches are responsible for ensuring that all equipment worn on the ice is safe, including helmets, skates, clothing, and hair.

Proper Helmet Fit

  • A hockey helmet should fit snugly, with minimal shifting and a properly adjusted chinstrap that rests gently under the chin.
  • The helmet rim should sit one finger-width above the eyebrows and make contact with the top of the head.
  • Try on various brands for the best comfort and fit.
  • Look for the CSA certification sticker on the back of the helmet shell.

Why Only CSA-Approved Hockey Helmets?

  • Hockey helmets are specifically designed for protection on ice surfaces. Other helmets, such as bicycle helmets, are not suitable for skating activities and do not meet Skate Canada safety standards.

Face Masks

  • Face masks are not required for CanSkate, but may provide added protection for younger or more cautious skaters.
  • Face masks ARE required for PowerSkate.

Used Helmets

  • Used helmets are acceptable only if they are in very good condition, have not sustained a significant impact, and still bear a valid CSA certification label.
  • Helmets should be replaced if they are cracked, missing liner pieces, have a loose fit, or lack manufacturing labels.

Liability & Compliance

  • Waivers are not accepted. A parent or guardian cannot sign away the helmet requirement.
  • The helmet rule is mandatory and non-negotiable. Skaters who are required to wear a helmet but arrive without one will be refused entry to the ice surface.

Cost & Accessibility

  • CSA-approved hockey helmets typically retail for around $50. Many are adjustable and can be used across multiple seasons for both indoor and outdoor skating.
  • Skate Canada does not currently offer rebates or incentives for helmet purchases.

Coach Responsibilities

  • Coaches are expected to strictly enforce helmet requirements.
  • If a skater enters the ice without a helmet when one is required, the coach must escort the skater off the ice immediately.
  • Coaches cannot be reprimanded for upholding Skate Canada safety policies.
  • Positive reinforcement of helmet use is encouraged at all levels.

Tips to Prevent Head Injuries

In addition to wearing a helmet, DFSC encourages these safety practices for Intro to StarSkate and StarSkate participants:

  • Use properly fitted and well-maintained skates.
  • Dress appropriately—avoid scarves, bulky snowsuits, or long hair in the face.
  • Warm up and cool down before and after skating.
  • Learn proper falling and recovery techniques.
  • Maintain organized traffic flow on the ice during circuits and drills.
  • Use pylons or markers to identify rough areas or hazards.
  • Keep first aid kits accessible and ensure coaches are first-aid certified.
  • Enforce basic on-ice rules:
    • Get up quickly after falling
    • Look behind you when skating backward
    • No pushing, tag, or horseplay
    • No gum, food, or candy on the ice
    • Keep rink doors closed
    • Stop safely away from the boards

Bring a Friend Events

For events where guest skaters are invited onto the ice, all participants—regardless of ability—must wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet. This ensures everyone’s safety and allows coaches to begin sessions promptly and confidently.

Identifying a CSA-Approved Helmet

Look for the CSA certification sticker affixed to the back of the helmet shell. For more information on helmet standards, visit www.csagroup.org.

Commitment to the Policy

By signing this policy during registration, members acknowledge that they have read and understood the Helmet Use Policy and agree to ensure their child complies with all helmet requirements as outlined by Skate Canada and the Didsbury Figure Skating Club.

As one of our more challenging seasons comes to a close, we want to take a moment to recognize some of the support that helped us through it.
Thank you to the Town of Didsbury for selecting the DFSC as a recipient of the 2024 Community Grant Program.
This funding played a key role in helping us transition to new locations for the second half of our 2024/2025 season to continue offering programming for our senior skaters.
We appreciate the Town’s ongoing investment in youth sport and recreation.
Looking forward to getting back on home ice this fall.
